Why it belongs
Humboldt Park is one of six parks created when the city of Milwaukee established a Parks Commission in 1890, and it now covers roughly 71 acres; in 1936 city and county parks were consolidated under Milwaukee County [1]. In 1890 the Parks Commission bought 45 acres from two Bay View families for what was then South Park, a lagoon was added in 1893, and in 1900 the park was renamed for the Prussian naturalist Alexander von Humboldt [2].
